Four Insurtech Innovators Pitch at 2025 NIA Innovation Lab Demo Day

The Nigerian insurance industry took another bold step toward digital transformation as the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) unveiled four innovative startups at the 2025 NIA Innovation Lab Demo Day, held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the Insurers House, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The selected innovators — Bunce, MyCover.ai, Riwe Technologies, and SEAMFIX — pitched cutting-edge solutions aimed at addressing key challenges in Nigeria’s insurance ecosystem. The startups presented their products to insurers, investors, regulators, and industry leaders for potential adoption, partnerships, and investment.

Innovation as the Future of Insurance

In his welcome address, NIA Chairman Mr. Kunle Ahmed, represented by the Deputy Chairperson, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, described the Demo Day as more than a showcase of ideas.

“This gathering reaffirms our unwavering commitment to innovation as the cornerstone of the insurance industry’s future,” he said.

Ahmed noted that while insurance has always been built on trust, resilience, and protection, these values must now be delivered through new technologies, channels, and mindsets to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

“Innovation is no longer optional. It is the lifeblood of relevance today — driven by technology integration, customer-centric solutions, and data-driven insights,” he added.

The Vision Behind the NIA Innovation Lab

According to the NIA Chairman, the Innovation Lab was created as a hub for creativity, collaboration, and experimentation — bringing together startups and insurers to test ideas, build partnerships, and scale solutions with real-world impact.

“Our commitment to innovation is not a slogan; it is a pledge,” Ahmed said.
“A pledge to invest in research and development, promote enabling regulatory frameworks, and build resilience against climate risks, cyber threats, and emerging global challenges.”

He stressed NIA’s vision of an inclusive, digital, and adaptive insurance industry that empowers individuals, businesses, and communities to thrive despite uncertainty.

Regulatory Support for Insurtech Growth

Speaking at the event, Mr. Ahmed Abba Metteden of the Innovation Hub at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) commended the NIA for driving innovation. He reaffirmed NAICOM’s strong support for insurtech development, highlighting its collaboration with FSD Africa and UNDP in creating the Insurtech Guidelines and Sandbox Framework.

Accelerating Industry Transformation

Also speaking, Mr. Babatunde Fajemirokun, Chairman of the 2025 NIA Innovation Lab Committee and Managing Director of AIICO Insurance Plc, explained that the Lab was designed to accelerate industry transformation through collaboration and experimentation.

He disclosed that insights from the 2025 Insurance Innovation Survey revealed encouraging progress, including increased use of digital channels, growing interest in microinsurance, and better application of data analytics to understand customer needs.

However, he acknowledged persistent challenges such as low insurance penetration, trust deficits, and limited customer-centric products.

“These findings remind us that while progress has been made, there is still significant work to be done to unlock insurance as a true driver of financial inclusion and economic resilience,” Fajemirokun said.

Reimagining Insurance for the Digital Age

Since its launch, the NIA Innovation Lab has hosted ideation sessions, hackathons, and capacity-building workshops, producing promising solutions leveraging artificial intelligence for claims processing, blockchain for policy authentication, and mobile-first platforms to reach underserved communities.

“These initiatives prove that Nigerian insurance can be reimagined to meet the demands of the digital age,” Fajemirokun concluded.
