Kogi State has claimed the top spot in Nigeria for adult healthcare insurance coverage, according to fresh 2023 data from StatiSense and EFInA.
With 11% of its adult population enrolled, Kogi has pulled ahead of Lagos (9%), Oyo (7%), and the Federal Capital Territory (6%). This achievement shows the state’s strong commitment to making affordable healthcare accessible to everyone—no matter where they live.
How Kogi Got to the Top
The success story centers on the Kogi State Health Insurance Agency (KGSHIA), led by Dr. Kunle Aledare. His leadership has brought:
- Mass enrollment drives across urban and rural communities.
- Outreach programs targeting underserved areas.
- Partnerships that keep healthcare affordable and sustainable.
“Thousands of rural residents now get medical care without the fear of huge bills,” said Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the state’s spokesperson.
“Under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, we’re not just building hospitals—we’re building a healthcare system that works for everyone.”
Big Steps to Make Healthcare Accessible
Kogi isn’t just celebrating numbers—it’s setting the pace for universal health coverage in Nigeria.
- Deal with NULGE: The state has signed a landmark agreement with the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, giving affordable health insurance to Local Government staff.
- Care for Retirees: Thousands of pensioners are already covered, with more joining daily.
- Better Facilities: Over 200 Primary Healthcare Centres are being upgraded so people in every community can get quality care.
In Line with National Goals
Fanwo says these efforts match President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s push for quality, affordable healthcare for pensioners and low-income earners.
“We’re building a healthy, empowered population as the foundation for Kogi’s sustainable growth,” he added, thanking the Federal Government for its support.
