Why Students Should Consider a Career in Insurance: CIIN Leads Awareness Campaign in Lagos

As part of its mission to drive awareness and build the next generation of professionals, the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) recently led an inspiring campaign to promote careers in insurance among students in Lagos.

The awareness campaign, which took place during the Insurance Awareness Week, saw hundreds of enthusiastic students from the Department of Insurance and Actuarial Science, University of Lagos (UNILAG), and the Accountancy Department, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) engaging with top insurance practitioners.

Insurance: A Career for the Digital Generation

Speaking to the students, insurance experts highlighted the exciting opportunities available in the modern insurance industry, especially for graduates across various disciplines.

“It doesn’t matter what course you studied—whether it’s computer science, business administration, or engineering—the insurance industry needs your skills,” one of the facilitators explained.

They stressed how digital transformation in insurance (InsurTech) is opening doors for tech-savvy graduates, with roles in data analytics, software development, and risk management in high demand.

Preparing Students for the Future of Insurance

Dr. Yeside Oyetayo, the immediate past Rector of the College of Insurance and Financial Management (CIFM), encouraged students to consider insurance as a dynamic and rewarding career path.

“We’ve shared resources, including a comprehensive guide on how students can prepare for insurance exams,” she said. “Insurance is no longer just about selling policies; it’s about innovation, technology, and protecting the financial future of millions.”

Dr. Oyetayo described insurance as the next-generation financial sector, emphasizing its role in economic development and resilience.

Why Insurance is a Career Worth Considering

Here’s why students should see insurance as more than just a fallback option:
Diverse career paths – from underwriting and actuarial science to tech-driven InsurTech roles.
Global relevance – insurance professionals are needed in every economy worldwide.
Job security – the industry is growing steadily as risk management becomes essential in all sectors.
Opportunities for innovation – with digital tools revolutionizing how insurance works.
