Nigerian Insurance Operators Call for Sector Reforms and Sustained Public Awareness

The Nigerian insurance industry has wrapped up its first-ever Insurance Awareness Week, with operators calling for urgent sector reforms, continuous public education, and increased adoption of insurance products across the country.

The week-long event, spearheaded by the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), featured a series of impactful activities, including awareness walks, school outreach programs, market activations, and a youth-focused innovation challenge. The campaign was simultaneously held in Lagos, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, and Kano, targeting diverse audiences to deepen insurance literacy.

Building a Culture of Insurance in Nigeria

In her opening remarks, Mrs. Yetunde Ilori, President of CIIN, underscored the importance of sustaining the momentum gained during the week.

“The awareness we created in this one week is not just for today—it must continue. This is a movement we have planned for months, and we are committed to building a culture where Nigerians see insurance as a necessity, not a luxury,” she stated.

Mrs. Ilori reaffirmed CIIN’s commitment to initiatives that promote insurance education, grassroots engagement, and industry-wide collaboration. She also called on all Nigerians to embrace insurance as a tool for securing the nation’s future and safeguarding individual financial stability.

A Historic Milestone for the Insurance Industry

Highlighting the significance of the event, Mrs. Ilori said:

“This is the first time in history that the Nigerian insurance industry is hosting a coordinated Insurance Week. Our goal is to take insurance to the grassroots and showcase its critical role in driving economic growth and protecting livelihoods.”

She expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for Insurance and other stakeholders for their unwavering support in making the maiden edition a success.

With insurance penetration still low in Nigeria, initiatives like the Insurance Awareness Week are vital for bridging the knowledge gap and encouraging more people to embrace risk management solutions.
