Ultimate Health HMO Expands to Serve Nigerians Abroad and Students at Home

Ultimate Health HMO is extending its health insurance services to two key groups—Nigerians in the diaspora and students in tertiary institutions—as part of its drive to make quality healthcare more accessible.

Speaking at the company’s 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja, Otunba Lekan Ewenla, the MD/CEO, announced the launch of a new diaspora health insurance plan designed for Nigerians living overseas who want to provide consistent healthcare coverage for their loved ones back home.

“A large portion of remittances sent to Nigeria goes towards healthcare, but it’s often disjointed. We’re offering a structured solution so families get continuous care, not just emergency help,” Ewenla explained.

The diaspora plan is already gaining traction in countries like the U.S. and U.K., supported through partnerships with diaspora groups, faith-based organizations, and businesses.

Health Coverage for Students

Ultimate Health HMO is also advocating for mandatory health insurance for over 20 million Nigerian students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges. Ewenla stressed the need for the government to fully implement the NHIA Act 2022, working closely with the Federal Ministry of Education, NUC, NBTE, and NCCE.

He highlighted that the current ₦2,000 annual premium for students is outdated and needs review to ensure quality healthcare services.

“Getting students enrolled strengthens the risk pool and makes healthcare affordable for everyone,” he noted.

The company is working with NANS and proposing a system where health insurance payments are integrated into school fees for easier adoption.

Tech-Driven Healthcare Improvements

Ewenla also introduced a digital pre-booking system that cuts hospital waiting times from the usual long queues to as low as 10 minutes, with a goal to reduce it further.

“It’s about dignity in care—patients should be seen promptly,” he added.

Additionally, 70–75% of resources are now being channeled towards preventive healthcare, focusing on wellness rather than just treating illness.

Commitment to Quality Care

Board Chairman Angela Ajala reaffirmed the company’s focus on prompt claims settlement and serving underserved populations.

“Our priority is the well-being of our enrollees. Fast claims processing isn’t just policy—it’s our culture,” she emphasized.

The AGM wrapped up with a renewed commitment to expanding coverage, improving service delivery, and supporting Nigeria’s broader healthcare goals.
