Oyo State Government Trains 180 Traders and Artisans on Business Insurance for MSME Growth

Introduction

The Oyo State Government has taken a significant step toward empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by training 180 traders and artisans on business insurance and leadership development. This initiative, held at the Federal Government Secretariat, Ikolaba Road, Agodi, Ibadan, is designed to equip business owners with the knowledge and tools needed to protect their ventures from unforeseen risks. By prioritizing financial literacy and risk management, the state is ensuring that businesses thrive despite economic uncertainties.

The importance of business insurance cannot be overstated, especially for small-scale entrepreneurs who often operate with limited financial resources. Without proper insurance coverage, a single accident, theft, or market disruption can lead to irreversible losses. Recognizing this, the Oyo State Government has launched a comprehensive training program to educate traders and artisans on various insurance policies that provide financial protection against unexpected setbacks.

According to Hon. Adeniyi Adebisi, the Commissioner for Investment, Trade, Cooperatives, and Industry, this initiative is part of a larger plan to support MSMEs and reduce business failures in Oyo State. Represented by Mr. Olawale Olanrewaju, the Assistant Director of Trade, he emphasized that insurance companies are now under strict regulatory oversight, ensuring that claims are processed efficiently and compensation is duly paid when necessary.

Beyond insurance education, the Oyo State Government has introduced a single-digit interest loan scheme in the 2025 budget to provide affordable financial assistance to traders and artisans. This loan program is designed to require minimal collateral, making it accessible to small business owners who struggle with traditional loan barriers.

The Babaloja General of Oyo State, Alhaji Y.K. Abass, praised the initiative, stating that leadership skills and financial security play a crucial role in business success. He stressed the importance of insurance as a financial shield, protecting businesses from unplanned expenses while offering a safety net for growth and stability.

Key Lessons from the Business Insurance Training

During the training, participants engaged in interactive sessions covering:

Leadership and strategic planning for business success.
Understanding business insurance and its role in financial protection.
Effective risk management strategies for MSMEs.
How insurance policies can help traders recover from unexpected business disruptions.

By the end of the program, traders and artisans gained practical knowledge on how to leverage insurance policies, access financial support, and improve business sustainability through strategic leadership.
