NAICOM, NPF Launch Joint Committee to Strengthen Insurance Compliance

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have inaugurated a joint committee to enforce compulsory insurance laws across Nigeria. This initiative aligns with the directive from the Inspector General of Police to begin strict enforcement of motor vehicle insurance, effective February 1, 2025.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting in Abuja, the Commissioner for Insurance, Ayo Omosehin, represented by Deputy Commissioner for Insurance (Finance and Administration), Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, emphasized that the committee’s formation was a collaborative effort to ensure compliance with mandatory insurance regulations.

The Police delegation was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mallum Maina, signifying the strong partnership between law enforcement and the insurance regulatory body.

Key Objectives of the Joint Committee

The committee is tasked with developing and implementing strategies to enhance insurance enforcement nationwide. Its main objectives include:

  • Ensuring full compliance with compulsory insurance policies as mandated by the Insurance Act 2003 and other related laws.
  • Strengthening the working relationship between NAICOM and the Nigeria Police to enhance enforcement.
  • Providing training and capacity-building programs for personnel of both organizations on compulsory insurance enforcement.
  • Evaluating challenges in enforcing insurance laws and proposing solutions.
  • Developing protocols for joint enforcement operations across the country.
  • Recommending policy reforms to improve compliance with insurance laws.
  • Undertaking public awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians on the importance of compulsory insurance.

Tools for Effective Enforcement

To ensure a smooth implementation of enforcement measures, NAICOM has provided key resources to the committee, including:

  • The Insurance Act 2003, which serves as the legal framework for enforcement.
  • The Inspector General of Police’s directive on third-party motor insurance enforcement.
  • A list of licensed insurance companies authorized to issue valid motor insurance.
  • The NAICOM USSD code for quick verification of insurance policies.
  • Access to NAICOM’s official website for purchasing genuine third-party motor insurance.

Commitment to Safer Roads and Insurance Compliance

NAICOM described the committee’s inauguration as a significant step toward ensuring that all vehicle owners comply with compulsory insurance laws. The collaboration between the commission and the police aims to create a safer and more secure environment for road users while holding vehicle owners accountable for their legal obligations.

With this joint initiative, NAICOM and the Nigeria Police Force are set to drive lasting improvements in insurance compliance across Nigeria.
