Why young drivers might pay up to six times for their car insurance

The average cost to insure a 17-year-old is £1,960.73, with some quoted as much as £17,000, The Sun found.

And prices will rise again in October when the Government increases the insurance premium tax.

We used Compare the Market to pose as skint 17-year-olds looking for cover for their first car.

A girl in Sheffield with a part-time job would pay at least £4,462 to cover a £750 Mondeo.

And an apprentice plumber in Northampton will need almost £2,000 to insure a ten-year-old £550 Vauxhall Corsa.

Some insurers quoted £17,000-plus for a 17-year-old, while a third refused insurance.

The cheapest quotes required drivers to have a black box.

Edward Molyneux, of Big Deal campaign, said: “They shouldn’t be punished for the sins of the minority.”

But insurers said high premiums reflect potential damage caused.

The AA said: “A driver in a ten-year-old car is just as likely to knock someone off a cycle as a driver in a year-old model.”
