Kunle Ahmed Urges Insurance Industry to Embrace Digital Disruption and Social Innovation

The Chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), Mr. Kunle Ahmed, has called on industry leaders to embrace digital transformation and social innovation as key drivers of growth in Nigeria’s insurance sector. Speaking at the recent NIA CEO retreat in Lagos, he emphasized the need for insurers to adapt to evolving technologies and societal demands to remain competitive.

Ahmed highlighted that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are reshaping the insurance industry. He urged stakeholders to rethink traditional business models and leverage these innovations to enhance efficiency, improve customer experience, and create new market opportunities.

“How can we use technology to better understand and serve customers? How can we harness data for smarter decision-making? Most importantly, how do we create a seamless digital experience that exceeds customer expectations?” Ahmed asked.

Beyond technology, Ahmed stressed the importance of social innovation in making insurance accessible to underserved populations. He highlighted that insurers must develop products tailored to financially vulnerable communities, ensuring financial inclusion while promoting sustainability.

He also pointed out the need for environmentally sustainable insurance practices, urging companies to align with global climate change initiatives.

“How can we design products that are both profitable and socially impactful? How can we engage stakeholders to promote sustainability? These are the challenges we must address,” Ahmed added.

The retreat also addressed key industry reforms, including:

  • The Nigerian Tax Reform Bill 2025
  • The Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Bill 2025
  • Enforcement of Third-Party Insurance Policies
  • Implementation of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Portal
  • The Role of the Ecowas Brown Card in Regional Insurance Coverage

Additionally, discussions covered AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area) opportunities for the insurance industry. The Insurance Industry AfCFTA Committee, along with the Commissioner for Insurance, led a session exploring how insurers can expand their reach across Africa.

Ahmed concluded by emphasizing that collaboration, innovation, and proactive leadership are essential for the industry’s future. He encouraged CEOs and stakeholders to embrace change, leverage technology, and prioritize social impact to ensure a resilient and thriving insurance sector in Nigeria.

With digital transformation accelerating across industries, Nigeria’s insurance sector must evolve or risk being left behind. The discussions at the NIA CEO retreat mark a significant step toward a more technologically advanced, inclusive, and sustainable insurance landscape.
